Mommy sick day

Sick day? As a stay at home mom? Hahahahahaahahaha! We've caught a couple small colds this year, but nothing serious or long until this past weekend. Saturday we all felt fine. Sunday I woke up with a miserable cold. I'm not sure how much truth is in this, but I feel like colds hit me hard when I'm pregnant. In any case, this one definitely knocked me off my feet. The toddlers just had drippy noses, though we could tell they weren't feeling well by how long they slept. Our 5-year old and my hubby, thankfully, still have not shown any symptoms. Sunday my hubby took our 5-year old to church. They then went to lunch and ran a couple errands we needed done. Afterwards, he dropped our 5-year old off at home and went to school to study for a couple hours. Monday was a regular school day for him. ( My hubby is currently going through power school. ) And this pregnant, under the weather momma was taking care of a 5-year old and 2-year old twins alone. Sick days are on...

"Reactive airways"

Here we are... Asthma Management Plan in hand for one of our toddlers. Last February, O had a severe case of RSV that put him in the PICU for four days. Shortly afterwards, we were seen by an asthma/allergy doctor who told us that O has "reactive airways." We actually had not noticed his retractions , induced by simply walking around the room. She asked, "Does he always breathe like that?" She was very helpful and put him on Singulair, but I left that appointment feeling like a horrible mother . The big question running over and over again through my mind, "How did I miss that?" He stayed on Singulair for a couple months, into the summer. We-- thank the Lord!-- managed to avoid catching any summer colds. The summer passed easily and O finished his prescription on Singulair. I watched his breathing and didn't feel that it was "out of control." I still noticed those retractions, but they didn't seem that bad. Maybe he was doing fine? Sept...

RSV and Premature Babies

February was a month of disease in our household. We started the month out with a cold, which we passed around between the five of us. There were a few days of rest before we picked up a stomach bug, which we passed around between the five of us before giving it to my poor mother who had come to town to help us unpack (turns out it will lie dormant for a few days before attacking another member of the family-- sorry, Momma!). But then C and O came down with a nasty cold. First came the cough, then the fussiness, then the fevers, then a long weekend where no one--save for the three-year old-- got any sleep. I took them into the pediatrician as soon as they opened Monday morning to receive a diagnosis I was not expecting: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Having done a fair amount of research on RSV after the babies were born (thanks to a very well-informed friend of mine), I knew that RSV is a concern for premature infants for the first two years of their life. Our insurance deni...
